The author of Team Yankee (1987) and Sword Point (1988) invents another plausible future regional war--this time between Libya and Egypt, each of which has a superpower sponsor. Gorbachev's reforms have not put an end to international tension. The Soviets and the Americans are still licking their wounds after a bloody set-to on Iran. Now their client states in Africa are headed for a showdown. With approval from the highest level--as well as the collusion of Pan-Islamic Egyptians--a gang of Libyans plans to assassinate the American and Egyptian presidents at a joint military review. The attack is foiled at the last minute, thanks to the quick reflexes of Medal of Honor winner Lt. Col. Scott Dixon, hero of the Iranian war--but the Libyan involvement is enough to send the Egyptians across the border looking for revenge. Since both of the superpowers have been conducting exercises in the area, the Soviets and the Americans are compelled to honor their promises of support for their respective allies, regardless of their wish to avoid another fiasco like Iran. Chances of a fast settlement are foiled by botched communications--and by a Libyan cabal bent on turning the brush war into an opportunity to rid Egypt of its democratic government. Lt. Col. Dixon, who is fighting a hot domestic war with his career-crazed wife, is thrown into the conflict as the leader of an armored outfit headed for the heart of the battle. The amassing of tactical and technical details--which is the strength of this thoughtful and imaginative military thriller--is, as in previous works by Coyle, likely to prove impenetrable for casual readers.
