CHAMPION CAMPAIGNER

A political analysis of the career of Franklin D. Roosevelt --and particularly timely when assessed from the standpoint of an election year. But one wonders how much campaign material the public can absorb -- even of historical and personal interest- after living through three and more intensive months of it.... This is a competent and thorough job, but at times falls of its own weight and seems academic and un-enlivened by the magnetism of the man itself. The champion vote getter in the democratic world, Roosevelt emerges as inimitable, for not only had he mastered the techniques (which are here discussed in minute detail), but he had all the natural endowments, he liked people and they liked him, he believed profoundly in the cause he endorsed, and he had supreme confidence in himself. Here is the story of eleven campaigns, from his earliest candidacy for state office, through the final campaign. In essence, this is virtually another biography- but focused specifically on F.D.R. as a campaigner. To some there will be new material; to those who have read the bulk of the already tremendous library on Roosevelt, most of the material is familiar.
