Almost no one can resist looking at forts and guns and the most reluctant readers will be caught by the painstaking diagrams and drawings here. Lured into the text by the pictures, a good deal of American history will be absorbed along with the story of the design of forts in America and how the changes in firearms produced others in fortifications and battle strategy, from the mid-16th century to the present. Author and illustrator did the popular A History of Firearms and once again have provided a book of solid information that is also beautiful to look at. The text anticipates the questions that are asked by children visiting the forts still standing. No rampart or ravelin goes unexplained and the illustrations and cross sections of the actual forts are labelled for use. These are so well drawn in terms of proportion and detail that any boy with a set of Lincoln Logs or plastic bricks will be able to use them as working blueprints.
