JOHN HENRY AND HIS HAMMER

The rhythm and poetry of this retelling of the American legend are irresistible, - by the author of Pecos Bill John Henry ""with a song in his heart and a hammer in his hand"" lifts a ship off the sand bar and totes three bales of wet cotton in the exuberance of his great strength, but when he becomes fireman for Casey Jones he knows what he was born to do -- for he was born with a hammer in his hand. The railroads were spreading West and miles of track had to be laid -- and there were mountains of rock to tunnel through. It was John Henry, with his ""shaker"" who fought the mountains -- driving through, rescuing men from cave-ins, singing songs about the strength of steel, muscle and stone. Full of fabulous events -- the excitement of great physical power is caught in the buoyant prose.
