Eye Stones were said to keep evil away, but they do little to protect Deborah Ritchie who comes to join her half sister only to be told that her house has burned down and she has gone up in flames with it. She is offered shelter, protection and a possible future with two men--a surgeon-widower Gaunt as intimidating as his name, and the seemingly more open Justin Stannard at the nearby Priory. But a letter--posthumous?--from her sister and the sudden death of a maid and the discovery of monstrousness which is surely madness augment a story which is superior to most. Be ye she who reads in this genre, more than enough to dilate the pupils and quicken the pulse.
