Twelve-year-old Bruce Jensen's attempts to win the friendship of a wild German Shepherd are stymied by the dog's wariness which is increased by efforts to trap him. Having been captured, the dog makes his escape after severely biting the boy's hand. Promises to let the dog remain wild are kept until the dog's weakened condition during a hard winter causes Bruce to effect a fairly heroic rescue. Regaining his strength slowly, the dog forms a deep attachment to Bruce and his farming family which includes eight-year-old Danny and toddler Michael. This is a good dog story for the age group.
