COPERNICUS

This is a story of singular devotion and dramatic achievement. Nicolas Copernicus lived a gle life marked by pity, ""piety, and wonder at the mystery of the world"". From his early years under the tutelage of Lucas Watzelrode this theme dominated Copernicus; as a dangerously questioning student in Krakow, shuddering at the cruelties of the Inquisition; as a devoted follower of Savonarola; as the Canon at Frauenburg; as a visionary both in the fields of human and scientific progress. In this readable text Copernicus, the man and the astronomer, are vividly focused against the background of the times--a seething, changing period which bridged the gap between the middle ages and the renaissance, and the ramifications of his theories in the works of later scientists are indicated. Of fundamental importance to those who would understand the nature of modern thought, the life of Copernicus was one of singular meaning. And this, one of the few biographies dealing with him, belongs on the shelves of high school and home libraries.
