CORONADO

Scholarly biography of Coronado, his explorations through southwestern part of what now comprises that area of the U.S.A. Thoroughly documented this tells of the search for El Dorado, the preliminary explorations of Fray Marcos seeking the Seven Cities of Cibola, Alarcon's voyage, the discovery of the Colorado, the explorations of Coronado and his lieutenants, among the pueblos of Cibola, the discovery of the Grand Canyon, troubles with the Indians, the hard journey to Quivara, the treachery of the guide, the return to Mexico, leaving some friars behind to work with the Indians. Then there are Coronado's later years as governor of Nueva Galicia, his trial and acquital. His importance lies in the record of the opening up of the southwest, and laying groundwork for future explorers. Competent, comprehensive, for students chiefly.
