An excellent woman's novel, in the story of a spinster school teacher apparently set in the mold of a past generation, who is remade when she loses her job and has to find new paths of endeavor. She salvages scattered members of her family, old and young; she establishes a boarding house in the home that the old uncle was about to lose, and she finds that middle age has its compensations. One might call it a fictionized Life Begins at Forty six. Hilda Morris writes substantial novels, sound in their reflection of a way of thought and life; her people are people such as you and I might know; she sets off no fireworks, but she tells a credible story and her work is increasingly readable.
