PENNY'S BEST SUMMER

Pleasant tale telling, but unimportant, in a companionable story of two 13-year olds and a blend of summer doings on a farm, mixed-up romance, and an oil strike. Agewise, it hits between the 8-11 and the 12-16, and cuts yet another facet of the author's output. Her Little Woman Carries On was for read aloud level; A Cap for Mary Ellis was a story of nurses' training, in a colored school. Here, Crane comes along when her father brings his family to Mrs. McKean's farm to dig for oil. This gives a certain undercurrent of suspense to a nice story of friendships formed. Slight but warm.
