NEW LETTERS IN AMERICA

Important for students of modern trends in writing, for class use, for editors and critics. But for the average reader, interested in collections of short stories, sketches and verse, the bulk of the material would seem of somewhat ephemeral interest, and somewhat self-conscious in form. For the essential flavor of the book, read a few at random -- Bread, etc. by Elick Moll, The Cruise by Muriel Rukeyser, Literature in a Political Decade by William Phillips and Philip Rahv. Brief notes on the contributors give special value to the collection for future reference. Few names have any ring of familiarity at present.
