ART AND FREEDOM

May I humbly confess my inadequacy to do more than indicate the scope of this study of world history in terms of the relations of man and ideas to art and freedom. ""Art, conquering Fate, conforms Nature to man, sets a bound to God's power and advances a frontier of freedom against the conplusions of the cosmos. Also at death, Art is Victory, Art is Freedom."" So it closes, this study which is in essence a review and an interpretation of the record, an attempt to formulate a philosophy of art as related to experience, ideas, and ideals of freedom. He weaves a continuous pattern, through study of periods, personalities, the impact of the one on the other, causes and consequences, whether familial, religious, economic, political, scientific, cultural. A book for the student, not the layman. No doubt an important contribution to the field of aesthetics, but I quite honestly found it difficult reading, diffuse and wordy.
