In a switchover from sports stories like Cinder Cyclone and Shortstop Shadow Mr. Brier writes a dog story that carries its melodrama and sentiment with a bravado that tugs the heart strings. Bill Rand, a fireman and an ex-marine, has an old score to settle with Jeff, a police dog he trained in the corps and later falsely blamed for cowardice in action in the Solomons. When he discovers Jeff is owned by the commissioner of public safety in the very town where he works, there are dramatic moments before Bill and the dog come together to rescue the commissioner's son in a crucial fire...and the old score is evened.
