A concise yet thorough cat medical manual in simplified veterinarianese. Beginning with condensed anatomy and physiology lessons, it covers all the health and nutrition basics, and offers advice on selecting the right cat and the right vet. Instruction is provided for diagnosing, treating, and preventing over 100 diseases and injuries, from fractures and fever to distemper, toad poisoning, and ""skunk encounters."" A corresponding series of decision charts enable one to distinguish at a glance between problems which require veterinarian attention (immediate or otherwise), and those for which home treatment will suffice. Gerstenfeld cautions against raw foods such as eggs, meat, and fish; and, in specific cases, recommends the educated application of home remedies including petroleum jelly, activated charcoal, and tomato juice. He fails, however, to warn of the potential harm of a high-ash-content dry food diet, and he encourages the purchase of pedigreed, or breed, cats in a society already overburdened with strays. But all in all, a handy, potentially money-saving, reference guide.
