GOETHALS AND THE PANAMA CANAL

A great story, told with appreciation of the man and the drama of his career. als was the man who dug the ditch that joined two oceans, after days of blood and battle, piracy and conquest, attendant on successive attempts to put a canal through. sold Rush emphasized the need, already felt; a French attempt failed against the of jungle and malaria. Then came Goethals, slow-moving, quiet, tenacious, sent to do the job. There were engineering complexities, here made very understanding, there were years of struggle, with Goethals, Colonel in white ducks, preserving order and progress, stern, just, tireless. A fine job.
