THE SALT AND THE SAVOR

A slow but authentically flavored panorama of frontier life in North West Ohio from the early 1840's through the Civil War as seen through the eyes and related in the tongue of old Uncle Perry Harman. Episodic--almost anecdotal form and salted throughout with witty and wise tag lines. Here you will find hard-working wilderness farmers and their families, the last of the local Indians, the country store--focal point of social life and often scene of fights -- births, weddings and deaths. Run-away slaves and abolitionists appear, followed by the Civil War--the men enlisting and participating in some of the battles of the Western Campaign--the wounding and deaths of known and loved neighbors and relatives--the coming of the foraging 12th U. S. Cavalry. And in the end, peace again. Sometimes verging on tediousness in its slowness and careful detailing of the life, the book in general fulfills its title--this is the salt and savor of life on the old frontier.
