SECOND TIME AROUND

A return visit from Dr. Gregor McLean (No Face in the Mirror, 1980)--psychiatrist, recovered alcoholic, and minder of everyone's business but his own. This time he's in pursuit of the man who ran down his psychiatrist friend Stephen Armitage. And, with help from his demimonde acquaintances and police chum John Weaver, McLean discovers a possible connection between the murder and one of Armitage's patients: Laurence Fisher, head of the Tekpress magazine group--a happily married husband and father who might just be a psycho-killer of prostitutes. Furthermore, Fisher may be a long-ago-programmed East German spy now falling apart psychically--a suspicion that's confirmed when Fisher heads for Germany, followed by friends, family, spies, and McLean. They all spend a lot of time in hotels and cafÉs and on German highways. . . while Fisher vainly pursues his pre-spy identity. The German backgrounds are well-done, but the story is too rambling and diffuse to pack much punch--and most of the plot ideas have been done better elsewhere.
