FIRST CONTACT?

The international octet that crews the twin spaceships of the United Nations expedition to Uranus harks back to a more informal, adventurous type of astronaut. All the men set out with ""supreme confidence in the wisdom of their leader,"" but when the intrepid Chris returns from his first visit to an alien starship to report that the occupant resembles ""an archangel,"" comradely discipline begins to break down. Angel-like Vari has come as an emissary of the Supreme Intelligence to give mankind a little evolutionary boost but, as suspicious crew member Morrey proves, mankind isn't quite ready to mingle with moral and technological superiors. So Vari cancels his appearance by wiping the whole episode from the astronauts' memories. It's all quite easy to forget, even without divine intervention.
