MASTER PLAN

One more threat to the world is uncovered by taciturn, doggedly nosy Graham Lorimer, a trouble-shooter for Sir Adrian Grantley, head of the United conglomerate. Lorimer is sent to the Scottish island Iniscaig, where United runs a fish farm and cannery. The manager's house was blown up while he and his family were on the mainland. That incident is followed by sabotage of a toxic-waste tank and by the surfacing, in wet suit, of shot-to-death Rona Smith, member of a terrorist group called the Fist of the Gaels, unheard of until now. Lorimer soon comes to suspect, however, a larger danger focused on Edward Horwill, dynamic head of the Nature Party, largest of several environmental groups seeking a toehold in Parliament and--as Lorimer begins to realize--in even more powerful areas. Meanwhile, Lorimer's still-loved, soon-to-be ex-wife Rosalind has more than a passing interest in Horwill; the beautiful wife of United's new director, Robin Forsyth, seems to have a strong interest in Lorimer; and Lorimer is fascinated by recent appearances of Nature party leaders on corporate boards. A visit to Amsterdam to investigate the latest of these produces a round of killings--and leads to a tense finale in Robin Forsyth's Iniscaig country house. Talkier and slower-paced than Stuart's most recent (The Margin), but there's still plenty of action and solid entertainment here for the patient reader.
