A low-keyed, reliable round of advice for parent-child activities during the influential first year. Gordon, Dean of the School of Education at the University of North Carolina, acknowledges his debt to experts like Brazelton, Gesell, Piaget, Kagan, Bruner, et al., but his text is his own undemanding synthesis of theory and suggestion, suitable for parents who want to read one book rather than the whole childcare shelf--although the Princeton Center's more particularized First Twelve Months of Life is superior. He divides the developmental periods, after the first month, into three-month stages and also includes a chapter on ""The 'Difficult' Baby"" which recommends a technique--a somewhat problematic technique--intended to relieve tension. Far less sophisticated than Stern's recent monograph, The First Relationship, but more appropriate for a general audience.
