WORKS AND DAYS and other poems

This is the first collection of poems (many of which appeared originally in a variety of periodicals) by a young poet who is currently on the faculty of Kenyon College. His subjects are predominantly Biblical and classical; the poems are usually about human beings and their characteristic tone is one of intense lyricism-often mysticism. The theme of Exile is treated powerfully in many of these poems- exile from one's land, one's family, and one's self; Part II in the collection deals with this theme in a sequence of autobiographical poems ""The Ark"", ""Wrack"", and""Return"". Mr. Feldman's great concern about contemporary men leads him to speak again and again of Prometheus: ""But Prometheus stands on, of all things the worst: To be a victim and have no torturer"". These are all poems of acute force and vision; we feel his kinship with the Old Testament prophets.
