Starting out with primitive days, Mr. Adler speculates wisely on how fire must have been found and used, and sets the stage for early theories about fire from the four elements of the Greek philosophers to the downfall of phlogiston in the light of Lavoisier's experiments. With this advent of modern chemistry and atomic theory came the increasingly profitable use of fire- for comfort, for industry, for propulsion. Each of the ways in which the flames lick directly or indirectly into our lives, and the importance of them, is quite memorably explained.
