From an author who ""lived at the turn of the century,"" an adventure on Long Island Sound. The young narrator, ""in the glory of my new long pants,"" accepts Mother Tipton's invitation to join her on a trip to market with her geese, though he finds them a little frightening. Mother Tipton is a strong rower, but an impenetrable fog interrupts the journey. Undaunted, she puts the geese on fishline tethers so that they can guide the boat to safety. With the quaint flavor and colorful but more formal style of its period, this lively story is not only full of interesting events but is also perfectly accessible. Krupinski's soft-textured illustrations, appropriately old-fashioned in tone, capture the limpid water and luminous mist beautifully; her sturdy characters, including the geese, are touched with humor. An auspicious picture-book debut.
