B IS FOR BETHLEHEM: A Christmas Alphabet

From ""A'S for Augustus, emperor of Rome,/Who decreed, 'To be counted, let each man go home,' ""to peace on earth for ""Zeeland and Zurich and Zanzibar,""a thoughtful, reverent, neatly phrased retelling of the Christmas story that manages, remarkably, to be logical and even sequential without seeming forced. Wilner, noted for The Poetry Troupe (1977), her popular anthology of poems to read aloud, wrote the verse for the lucky children in the school where she was librarian, Kleven's stylized illustrations, in bright, tender colors, are displayed against star-spangled grounds in rich, deeper hues. From a Nativity that recalls the Peaceable Kingdom to a last view of the candle-lit world spinning in space, they burgeon with joy and decorative detail. An attractive addition to the holiday canon.
