The Bulgarian author of The Christmas Train presents another train ride; this one, taking place during the summer, combines colorful double-spread landscapes with creative paper-engineering. Jeff and Marina's travels, described in the routine text, take them through the mountains, over a bridge, and finally to the island where Grandma and Grandfather placidly await them. What distinguishes this treatment is the spare but carefully crafted use of paper-engineering techniques. The page that illustrates the mountains is cut out in mountainous shapes; the tunnel has a cut-out at the end to reveal the children's destination. The bridge at the center of the book is the most impressive design, with a plastic overlay attached to the panoramic landscape it crosses. Adult readers will recognize the European design of Gantschev's train and countryside, but children will enjoy the detailed fold-outs and the brightly colored, broadly drawn pictures of this elaborately designed invitation to sightsee.
