A-B-C-DISCOVERY!

An alphabet book that borrows from other picture books without offering anything new. A large letter accompanies a word list that may or may not present all the sounds associated with letter, e.g., K features kangaroo and knife, while C only presents words with hard c sounds (canvas, camel, can, but not, say, city and cent). The illustration on the opposite page includes the words in the list. A ""Puzzles"" section, beyond the capabilities of the usual ABC audience, sends readers back through the pages, I Spy or Waldo fashion, to seek out, for example, a ""nocturnal animal."" The paintings are fun, old-fashioned, and highly detailed; Cohen's wonderful sense of humor is on full display, but is wasted by the innocuous concept.
