CHRISTMAS WITH TEDDY BEAR

Teddy Bear and his pet cat anticipate and then celebrate a very traditional (but quite secular) Christmas. McQuade doesn't tell a story, as much as string together a series of episodes (""Building a snowman,"" ""Writing to Santa,"" ""Decorating the tree"")--each described in two or three sentences--with which preschoolers will easily identify. The mesh of the canvas shows through the brushstrokes of McQuade's festivity-laden oil paintings, giving a textured effect similar to needlepoint. Starring a hero who is a close relation of Jane Hissey's Old Bear (1986), this is a small, affectionate book.
