THE LISTENERS

A century of future history passes unsung except for interstitial newspaper headlines as the Project scans the skies by radio telescope in search of extraterrestrial intelligence and finally picks up broadcasts from Capella. Religion and politics almost conspire to end communications (and the Project's director has more than his share of family crises) but the Capellans' message does get through. Literate SF, laced with bookish references and occasionally portentous musings on the human condition.
