AYO GURKHA!

From one point of view the exotic -- and apparently carefully observed -- background on Nepalese tribal life and on regiments of those same tribesmen serving in the Malayan jungles is this quiet story's chief strength. But the use of many foreign words from several different dialects and frequent references to obscure locations and groups will be a formidable obstacle, particularly since young Aitahang's successes -- tracking a leopard that menaces his father's flocks, facing Chinese insurgents, a wild elephant and bandits while an underage soldier -- are accomplished with a minimum of excitement.
