A magic-carpeted story for grown-ups on the royal road to Baktu, high in the Himalayas where Carol, nee DeLong in Cincinnati and via Vassar and Washington, comes as the wife of a rajah, Rahman. It is a marriage of love and Kama Sutran refinements indulged at some length although without consequences. Even an elaborate fertility spectacle cannot assure an heir since Carol had been in the hands of an abortionist who left her sterile. Other equally important matters overtake the little kingdom -- a Chinese invasion; the betrayal of Rahman's younger brother; the arrival of some Americans, among them Carol's former lover and would-have-been father of her child. Mr. Kuhn, who is a very genial storyteller, has written this to please as many people as possible so that there will be a happily-ever-after to follow this guided tour of a pleasure domain offering all those indoor and outdoor delights from Burton to Halliburton. You may vaguely recognize the real-life referrals.
