by James McM Douglas ‧ RELEASE DATE: July 30, 1969
The same characters as the author's Hunger for Racing (1967) with a different central figure and the same dependence on coincidence. Bud Foster has the first laps but army lieutenant Jerry Blockner is the big wheel and Arnie Tasjian just appears at the end to deliver Hunger's pizza and join the partnership. Briefly, Jerry is Bud's partner until Major disapproval, marriage-bound until his fiancee jilts him; uncommitted until a Florida fling lands him girl, job and future. It's older in outlook, in a superficial way, than the usual stock car story and the no-gloss presentation may attract wary readers but the chance happenings diminish its viability.
