Paradoxically, the one area in which Catholicism's strong organizational sense has failed her is an area most vital for the future of the Church: that of education. And that failure is so complete as to be, in the words of the editor of the present volume, ""unbelievable and scandalous."" This collection of essays is a first step toward a remedy of that defect, and its purpose is to familiarize the reader with the present circumstances of the Catholic educational establishment in those countries where the largest investment has been made of money and personnel: France, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, England, and the United States. Each country is covered in an individual essay, and all essays are written in parallel organization for the sake of comparison. It is the first book which affords such a comparative view, and it will be of much value to Catholic educators in this country.
