AS A FLAME SPRINGS

The story of perhaps the greatest of ""lyric lovers"", that of Browning and Elizabeth Barrett, and, in counterpoint, a thoughtful study of the evolution of their work. The book opens with their meeting and the months that led to the acknowledgment of their love. During this period she wrote her Sonnets, verse testament of her love for Browning. Their publication raised her to the ranks of pure poet, while he was still relatively unknown and unappreciated. Their elopement -- and fifteen years in Itay, where ""Ba"" emerged from a life within walls, dominated by invalidism and an overbearing father, to wide interests in politics, in travel, in friendship, in their son. Throughout, it is a record of unswerving love, immortalized, after her death, by Browning in The Ring and the Book... A fine piece of scholarship, not popular in approach, though done with a human touch. Libraries, scholars, colleges.
