Segregation is for some a religion, it is the unrepentant Southern kingdom of God. Norcan segregation and while the argument remains on the economic, civic, pedagogical, sexual or even ethical level. These interpretations must be known and understood. But -- subsuming and them all in the theological problem of the relation of man to man and all men to God. Thus written James Sellers, a member of the faculty of Vanderbilt University, and one who weathered the storm in that institution when it first expelled and then received again, an outstanding student for his desegregation activities. Law cannot do what neighbor love must. Law ended slavery, but segregation came instead. Law can end the outward trappings of segregation, but if slow-burning racial antipathy takes its place, the gain will not be great. Whether the Church becomes a new form of extending segregation, or whether the Church, at some cost, becomes the redeeming agency in this problem depends on the extent to which the Church and its members, of every brand, face the basic theological problem that segregation poses. This book has been written for all Christians everywhere, for in this world those spots that know no racial tension are increasingly rare.
