BEN SHAHN: Painting

The penetrating humor of some and the honest seriousness of others, combined with the juxtaposition of contrasts in those of all moods, distinguish the Ben Shahn paintings collected here. There are 96 reproductions which are arranged chronologically with title and owner's name printed under each. The only explanations (and not of every entry) are in the introduction, but most of the artist's works define themselves. However, Shahn's devotee following will wish that more had been presented in color--there are only 24 here--, since the mood and design are clarified and strengthened by the artist's use of brilliant shades. The book may be bought alone, or as part of a set, boxed with a new, revised edition of Ben Shahn: His Graphic Art (1957) which will be $22.00 before Christmas, $25.00 afterward.
