The Bird Watcher's Guide to Interpreting Bird Behavior"" deals with the experience and behavior of birds in natural and experimental surroundings. It applies the ""law of parsimony""--which recommends that one should not explain behavior by a higher level process when it can be adequately interpreted by a lower level process--and considers analogies to human experience such as permanent mating, etc.). Dr. Burtt discusses the sense organs, drives and motives, instinctive and learned behavior, migration, social behavior and communication, family problems, personality and intelligence. His is a modest presentation which does not overreach research. It is a layman's book, not dense or expanded sufficiently to attract the scholar.
