JEREMIAH KNUCKLEBONES

Jeremiah Knucklebones, a terrier, gets a new bicycle for his birthday and decides to run away to see the world. In an old-fashioned way he does pretty well for himself. Despite a crashing failure in his debut with the Bash-Oink Circus, Jeremiah finds work with a workhorse blacksmith who repairs his broken cycle and returns three young mice to their mother. And when he is taken captive by a baboon truck driver to be a pet for daughter Rosie (strange, since the other animals have accepted him as an equal), Jeremiah calls on his magic walnut, a gift of the horse's mother, to get him safely back home in time to find his mother sitting proudly in bed with six new baby (puppy) brothers and sisters. Of course if Jeremiah were a boy, his episodic journey would be a very routine fantasy, but the miniature, intricately detailed pencil drawings with ballooned dialogue make this an agreeable curiosity.
