The story of a conscientious objector in the War between the States. A cousin of John Brown goes to Canada to avoid the draft, and returns -- after experiences with Indians as a trapper, to find himself an object of contempt. Only the girl he loves understands him, though the taunts of ""yellow belly"" hound him through the years. Not on a large enough scale to compete with the other Civil War novels; somewhat episodic in character and handling, with the plot cluttered by some forty odd members of a family. Fair entertainment, but unexceptional.
