Weird will do to qualify this first novel of two eccentrics which is sometimes repellent, sometimes unnatural, and lucid only on occasion. Baldly, the facts are as follows. Miss Goering, a very rich lady, attracts as living companions a former governess, Arnold -- forty year old incompetent, and Arnold's father, an old goat. These do not satisfy her and she goes on to bar pick-ups, one a malcontented syphilitic. Mrs. Copperfield, our other lady, runs to prostitutes -- meets two in Panama, and adopts their life. Both ladies, until they work out their ""salvation"" this way, have been lost and unhappy. We felt pretty much the same way.
