More intensive than ancers of the Ballet by Atkinson & Hillman (see report on P. 127 (J-39)), this covers only fifteen dancers and goes deeper into their lives and the meanings of their careers. From Marie Taglioni who danced in the 19th century, on down to the present, the list includes Karsavina, Nijinsky, Pavlova, Tallchief, Eglevsky and so forth. The interrelatedness of ballet and other fields is shown too, for example, in the work of Katherine Dunham and Agnes de Mille. A good roundup of the varied aspects of ballet and its personalities, makes a good supplement to the other book for the increasing number of young balletomanes.
