THE SHADOW OF THE PALMS

Another rather shapeless jaunt for Washington, D.C.'s Anna Peters (Under Orion), now summoned to Miami by longtime friend and mentor Henry Brammin, who's worried about the sudden affluence of nephew Rod. And, while Anna is getting the goods on Rod, it so happens that her former lover John Hillary is doing investigative-reporting on the theft of Mayan sculptures from Guatemala. The two lines of inquiry come together, of course, both focusing on art-collector Vladimir Sebastian, cancer-ridden man of mystery--and Anna and John become the targets of Sebastian's incompetent henchmen. (These assassins fail, through car, fire, bullets, and scythe, to dispatch the intrepid couple.) Lots of exotic backgrounds but zero suspense--the who and the where of the stolen treasures are apparent from the start. Competent, thoroughly uncompelling chase-and-romance in the mini-Maclnnes mode.
