THE JADE UNICORN

A lively, idiotic mishmash of ghastly satanism, sexual mutilation, and psychic slop. Supernaturally gored and dismembered bodies start turning up in Central Park and other Manhattan spots--is some Evil Force at work? So it seems, especially when a dismembered and raped 13-year-old (her vagina is packed with green slime and three-tailed sperms) gets pregnant on the morgue slab and delivers a baby satyr. And interminable Satanic masses are being celebrated!--with gore and orgasm and green slime that suggest a crude parody of Lovecraft and Crowley. Who can battle these Satanic powers? Jade, that's who--a greeneyed, white poet-pimp-drugdealer who talks in ghetto lingo; he's a psychic and a gigolo who has received a jade unicorn amulet from his sex-hungry bedmate Adrienne. (She has stolen it from the collection of her castrated husband, the sadist-host to the rebirth of Satan on earth.) Eventually, of course, Jade will have the usual Big Showdown with the Great Beast on the astral plane--and the heroine, a psychic lesbian, apparently winds up pregnant with some mystic savior. Ludicrous characterization, kitchensink Zen/occult/Satanism, grossly inflated action throughout; but there's an undeniable energy in Halpern's sheer bestial insistence. . . for strong-stomached psychic horror-freaks only.
