HOUR OF THE CAT

Another Nancy Drew-ish slice of suspense/romance from the author of Nightmare in Pewter--all about the strange harassments being heaped upon young Indiana librarian Valerie Hamilton. Someone has planted an announcement in the local paper about Val's ""engagement"" to stuffy Martin Forster. Then Muldoon the cat shows up with a sinister message (something about a fatal honeymoon) on his collar. Plus: whispered phone calls to both Val and Martin, the mysterious jamming of Val's car, and another woman's jewelry planted in Val's house. Gradually, through Martin's fearful blurtings and revelations from one and all (including Val's favorite man, lawyer Dan Richards), the drift of the incidents becomes simpler and nastier: Martin's loose wife Sandra had been strangled on their honeymoon, and Val seems to have been set up as a stand-in for a replay. Plenty of suspects (Martin, garage-man Earl Winters, even Dan), a few surprises, too many red herrings, and some library talk about local literary vigilante groups--a homey and agreeable enough wisp of small-town mystery/gothic.
