Retirement cheerios by the author of inspirational/informational books about a good life in house and garden. Mr. Hersey has also contributed to this review of their sunny retirement years, the crux of which seems to be --relax, enjoy and respect life and each other. However, this healthy upbeat view is unclouded by thunderheads haunting a vast majority of retirees, like financial stringencies, ill health, lack of orientation to leisure time activities (although Mrs. Hersey does cover a wide varieties of meaningful pursuits). Mrs. Hersey chatters happily on about shared pleasures, division of interests, travels and home-by-the-fire, the changing seasons, adjustments to the early months of retirement and she tosses in a few pleasant recipes. The Herseys' emphasis on the necessity of respecting one another's need to be alone at times and their insistence on ""drifting"" rather than running by a clock is admirable. But for those unblessed with a home in a peaceful Connecticut town, another home on the Cape and the wherewithal for travel, those for whom the rich years are the five-and-dime years, this may be merely sugared Geritol.
