Following the Henry Cecil vein, this combines its crime with law and presents solicitor Adams with no choice but to represent one Clover, accused of the robbery of a market town bank. Clover's blackmail is Adams' daughter, held as hostage, and to get her back Adams perverts the course of justice, is called a Judas of the bar, wins Clover's acquittal, has his daughter returned -- and, on a gamble, gets Clover on a murder charge. Courtrooms and criminals do make a good combination.
