Lebanon, of all the Arab countries, in the current news, is distinguished by its intensely democratic form of government, its rich and fertile climate (similar to Southern California), its polyglot culture, its wealth of educational institutions, and its fifty-per-cent Christian population. Journalist Jim Breetveld tells the Lebanese story in detail, emphasizing the classical and Christian origins of its culture, the many similarities it has with the West and also its marked Eastern qual Unique among its neighbors as a friend both to the Western and Arab world, this subject, of specific interest to American school children, is conscientiously treated her But despite the honest and compact exposition of the text, it lacks a vividness which is implicit in the subject, a weakness which is also manifest in the peculiarly bland illustrations of Haris Petie, illustrations which totally lack the extreme beauty of the Lebanese landscape. This fault may possibly be explained by the joint effort of author and illustrator to stress the similarities of Lebanon and American life to the American reader.
