THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

... has a genuinely farcical story line that the reteller and the illustrator have captured in text and pictures. Susan Perl's illustrations are topnotch cartoons and Johanna Johnston's soberly understated reporting of the wily barber's meddling blend beautifully. ""Opera"" means ""culture"" and the two words can produce a silent gloom where entertainment was the original intention. Exposure to this book can help cure that widespread reaction, although the music seems to have been overlooked--no designation of popular arias, no mention of the characters' vocal range requirements, no musical notations.
