WHAT ABOUT COMMON STOCKS?

Regardless of the stock market recession in recent weeks, this book should be welcome in providing a measuring rod by which people can gauge for themselves the soundness of common stock offerings. In his very opening sentences the author states: ""This book is not a recipe for quick stock market profits."" Too many such have been written and distributed, falling into hands of gullible optimists who accepted the promises of vast profits in growth stocks, huge yields, when to get in, when to get out. May and June have opened many eyes to the fallacies. This text provides a simple, fundamental, instructive approach on various phases of the market, what to look for in stocks, how to spread your risk, how to select a broker, how professionals work, how to avoid ""glamor"" stocks and fast operations. It provides a good companion to his What About Mutual Funds? (1958). It may be oversimplified for the well versed, professional investor, but for the average layman who wants to know how the stock markets function, how to place orders, how to invest with minimum risk, this is a good investment.
