AMERICAN CATHOLICISM: And Now Where?

A state-of-the-American Church report from the former editor of Commonweal Focusing on the widening schism between the American Church and Rome, Deedy examines in turn the rebellions (and loyalties) within major intra-Catholic groupings--bishops, priests, laity, women, and minorities--highlighting their growing (if somewhat exaggerated by the press) revolt. He points the finger finally at the Vatican for its rigid and suppressive policies (spotlighting the controversial disciplining of Catholic U. prof. Fr. Charles E. Curran) and foresees a real possibility of major defection by American Catholics. Particularly timely in light of the Pope's recent visit, this is balanced, spirited analysis.
