BEDSIDE BOOK OF FAMOUS BRITISH STORIES
by ‧RELEASE DATE: July 22, 1940
A companion volume to the Bedside Book of Fambus American Stories published in 1936. Equally diversified collection of writers and stories, old and new, familiar and less familiar. I don't know how much Maugham's gargantuan Tellers of Tales may have scooped the market, but this seems to me to supplement it admirably. Maugham's was 19th century on. The emphasis here is for the most part on the middle 19th on, but it leads off with Chaucer, Defoe, Malory, Addison, Goldsmith, Trollope, and comes down to more recent names, among them Meredith, Hardy, Stevenson, Wilde, Conrad, Barrie Doyle, Kipling, with today represented by Galsworthy, Maugham, Gibbs, Masefield, Walpole, Mansfield, Huxley, O'Flaherty, etc., etc. No matter where you turn you find nonpareil material, by master artists and master entertainers. 80-- stories-1256 pages --with biographical notes.
